Symptom Description: After the ordeal of replacing the damper I get the service active handling and abs warnings. No wiring was damaged and according to a friend’s scan tool the steering position sensor is in working condition.

I don’t recall the codes but I know that my steering rack and steering wheel senor are out of sync. All is well until I turn the steering wheel hard left.

Suggestion and Solution:

If you don’t maintain the steering wheel position to the actual wheel position, you will see the problem that you are seeing.

Someone let the steering wheel turn from the position that it was in when you disconnected the steering shaft from the rack. or moved the actual wheel position when the shaft was disconnected. Now the steering wheel position sensor at the base of the steering column (at the fire wall on the inside of the cab) is out of ZERO alignment.

You will need to disconnect the steering shaft from the rack and either turn the wheels to the correct position or turn the steering wheel to the zero position.

You should really pull up and read the DTCs in the DIC to rule out the NUMEROUS OTHER DTCs that could be causing this issue.

To do this correctly, you need a Tech 2 Scanner or you can get creative and use a multimeter to read the output voltage on the SWPS. It needs to be right around 2.5 ish volts DC to be zero (wheel pointed dead ahead) Once the wheels are dead ahead and the SWPS is 2.5 ish volts, reconnect the shafts again! .

Working experience:
I recently purchased an Autel MD808 PRO under the belief that it could, among other things, clear the “Service Engine Soon” instrument cluster readout on any Mercedes with OBD II. Per Autel Tech Department it can clear codes/instrument cluster readouts through the OBDII port…but only for years ’08 and newer, which I (frustratingly) discovered AFTER I had purchased and attempted to use it.

I saw there is a “Autel 38 Pin OBD2 Diagnostic Scanner Adapter Connector Cable for Mercedes Benz” their own product. So i want to find out if it will work with the DS808 Pro in all claimed capabilities.
It’s confirmed. There is no way to interface the 38 pin connector to the OBD II 16-pin connector with an “inexpensive” Autel scanner.
According to said tech department, there is NO ADAPTER that can be used to interface the MD808 Pro to the 38-pin connector. For that matter, the technician intimated that the tool that Autel produced that COULD interface and clear the instrument cluster readout was a >$4K model. That’s way to expensive for me.
The technician further explained that the ’99 Mercedes was a little ahead of its time, having BOTH the 38-pin connector found under the hood in the fuse box and the OBD II port under the dash. From what I understand, the OBD II port will allow the reading of ENGINE-specific data…but just about any inexpensive OBD II scanner can do that.
If there is an inexpensive scanner that can read ALL the data/systems AND clear the instrument cluster readouts, I would be interested in hearing about it/them.

Some people use Delphi system for old Mercedes. i.e I use it on a 1998 E320, and I can access Engine computer, Transmission Control Unit, Instrument Cluster, Restraint System, Ignition (EIS), Climate Control, ABS/BAS, but it will not read body control modules, like SAM, PSE, door control modules, lower/upper console modules etc. This is good enough for me.

Disclaimer:
Parts of Mercedes owners prefer icarsoft scanners.  iCarsoft MB II is the fact that it will not work on older models past 1993. It will not work on models that require a 38 pin connector such as the E 320 and CLK 430. In these models it can only read the ECU (check engine light). You also want to skip MB i980 which can only do ECU and SRS / Airbag diagnostic.

VXDIAG Porsche Piwis3 Developer Mode shell config. update tips

The Developer Mode in Porsche Piwis 3 is not available when you update the shell, coz you lose the menu diagnostics configuration to switch between regular and developer mode,
Problem solved if you copy the old file com.porsche.piwis.Shell.exe.config

Here is how to update the shell config. and get the diagnostic configuration boxes back, on the system tab.

After a successful update from 37.250.20 you will loose the two above mentioned boxes from the System tab.
If you did not loose them, then the [PIDT] diagnostic software did not update completely.
So it’s a good thing to loose it !

Go to C:\PiwisApps\Shel\ and carefuly edit with notepad   this file –> com.porsche.piwis.Shell.exe.config

after the update the PIDT section shows up in green, after U edit it it will be blue.

First picture shows, red underlined, 2 places, beginning and the end of the green section, what to remove.
On top [Line 568 on mine] U delete  these four symbols       !–<     on the bottom [line 603 on mine] U delete these 3 symbols   –>
Then U save the config file.
Restart the PC and your Diagnostic config box for 991,981,970 and Diagnostic config for other models RE-APPEAR.

rm996 has the solution how get the developer functionality back up and running, !!! PM him.

Developer mode is a special Piwis program that allow a lot of advanced coding normally reserved only to Factory.

With this function you will have a tool that can do more than software of official Porsche Dealer.
For example, you can reprogram all ECUs completely offline.

How to use Piwis Developer Mode:

Install winrar and winhex on your computer.

-1-locate the file c:\program files\porsche\PIDT_P_MIG_DLSS3\pidt\plugins\de.dsa.pidt.datatype.jar and copy it on your desktop in order to modify it.

Open it with winrar,in the wirar windows locate the file

\de\dsa\pidt\datatypes\utils\Helper$1.class and drag it on your destop , delete it from the archive after the copy, keep the winrar window open.

Open Helper$1.class on your desktop with winhex and goto offset E81, replace 9A by A7 and save.

Drag back the save file on the winrar windows still open and click OK.Close winrar

Copy the new file de.dsa.pidt.datatype.jar you just made in

c:\program files\porsche\PIDT_P_MIG_DLSS3\pidt\plugins, overwrite it.

copy the file aftersales.sig on your desktop and rename it development.sig.Copy this file back in the folder

Do exactly the same method given above with the folder c:\program files\porsche\PIDT_P_MIG_DLSS3 with its own files.

To transform it in developer :
