How To Diagnose an Overheating Car

13-1
Carmakers torture test their creations to make sure they won’t overheat in almost every situation imaginable—from Death Valley to the northernmost reaches of Norway. But parts break over time, and one day you may find yourself roadside with a smoldering engine.

So what happened and what should you do about it?

13-2

The most common culprit involves your coolant. This liquid is responsible for cooling your car as it circulates throughout the engine. If there’s a leak somewhere in the cooling system, then all of it or a significant amount could leak out. As soon as the coolant is gone, all you’re left with is the outside air to keep that engine cool Auto Repair Software.

How quickly you experience overheating is dependent on the outside temperature and whether or not you’re moving with air running through the engine. Regardless, the engine is bound to overheat at some point. Never drive without coolant.

If there isn’t a visible coolant leak anywhere, and the problem is still coolant related, there may be a blockage somewhere. Dirt and other particles can make it into the hoses, causing a restriction or complete blockage. This creates a similar problem to all the coolant leaking out, but you’ll have to do a full coolant flush and find the blockage to fix it.

But it might not be your coolant at all. An extremely low oil level can also cause temperature issues. An engine uses oil for lubrication, and without it, friction from moving parts can create generate excess heat.

This problem is easily remedied by checking your oil frequently, especially on engines with a lot of miles on them because they tend to burn oil faster than newer engines.

A Spanner in the Works

In another scenario, it’s possible there’s broken part in the cooling system. For example, a broken water pump would cause the flow of coolant throughout the engine to stop or bad thermostat is stopping all flow of coolant throughout the OBD2 vehicle diagnostics.

The radiator is another key component of the engine’s cooling system. While leaks and clogs could be contributing to your problems, a broken fan is a more common ailment. Fans often switch on while sitting in traffic to simulate rushing air. If that fan fails, then you’ll see the temperature begin to rise while sitting in traffic or driving in extremely hot environments.

Those extreme temperatures could cause the car to overheat on its own as well. Even though most cars were designed to last in those locations, age can cause the cooling system to work at less than ideal strength.

When the Temperature Rises

13-3

When you see that red gauge rising, immediately switch off the air conditioning (if you’re running it) and turn on full heat to help lower the temperature in the engine bay. Although it won’t help your comfort level, this step could possibly save the engine.

Once you’ve adjust these controls, your best bet is to get off the road safely, turn the car off, and open the hood.

It’ll be tempting, but DO NOT check the coolant level directly after popping the hood. The radiator cap will be scalding hot and the coolant will be under extreme pressure. You’ll risk dangerous burns if you even manage to get the cap off.

Don’t ever think that the engine will be okay if your temperature gauge spikes. In the long run, you car—and your wallet—will thank you for getting off the road as soon as possible.

DAS Xentry C3 C4 Diagnostic Software, Resources, Wiki

Xentry DAS (Diagnostic Assistance System) is the complete diagnosis system that is used to troubleshoot Mercedes-Benz car problems and is the official Mercedes-Benz dealer software. It can configure, reprogram, initialization of new components, program, perform guided tests, read or erase fault codes in any of the systems including AirMatic, AirBag, SRS, EIS, Transmission, ETS, BAS,  and all of the control modules. DAS Xentry software requires the C3 Multiplexer Star or C4 SD Connect hardware. The c3 multiplexer is an earlier model that was replaced by the C4 SD Connect. To operate Xentry, you will need a laptop with a serial port RS232 to connect the Multiplexer and run the Xentry software. The online marked is flooded with pirated versions of Xentry Diagnostic scanner, so be careful and avoid those hacked versions. Online merchant which may not be authorized resellers, distribute the software and show you how to install Xentry as you can see on this guide.

Individuals or business in United States can purchase systems by contacting the Mercedes-Benz USA LLC. Contact MBUSA the official source by visiting STAR TekInfo website.

1. Where to buy  Xentry C3 Multiplexer or C4 SD Connect?

The system was listed for sale and can be purchased from sellers on www.obd2tool.com.

2-1

Be wise when you purchase a Xentry DAX Multiplexer as there seems to be a lot of cloned versions on the market. Unfortunately, there isn’t a good way to know what is original or not. Buying DAS Xentry program Diagnostic Software for Mercedes Benz on Amazon at least adds an extra layer of protection in case there is an issue. We would not recommend buying from retailers that ship from China on eBay. Yes, you can return those units if there is a problem but you will have to pay return shipping and will not know if you are getting an original unit. We do not endorse any of these sellers and do not know if these are authentic versions.

To learn how to use Xentry software MB Star C3 or C4 DAS watch this video that was posed online by OBD2TOOL.

2. What is Developer Mode Extension for DAS.

Developer extension of the DAS for Mercedes-Benz vehicles allows in-depth configuration and programming of the control units. This option is typically enabled for the factory version of the scanner. It was meant for development and testing purposes of the onboard electronic systems. It will allow the user to change the configuration of the car. For example, you can change the ECU, program to use a different engine model, change the speed limit or torque settings and a lot more. Using Developer Mode without knowing exactly what you are doing can be dangerous.

BMW Battery Registration with Rheingold ISTA

Topic: focus on why register the BMW battery replacement, BMW Battery Registration with Rheingold ISTA procedure.

BMW Battery Registration

BMWs need to know when you replace the battery, battery capacity and battery type must be registered! YOU DO NEED TO REGISTER battery replacements on BMWs with an IBS (Intelligent Battery Sensor).

Why register the battery replacement?

After installing a new battery, the service function ‘Register battery replacement’ must be run. The registration of the battery replacement is required to inform the power management (BMW Diagnostic Scanner in engine electronics and intelligent battery sensor) that a new battery was installed in the vehicle. If the battery replacement is not registered, the power management will not function properly and can lead to functions being limited by individual electrical consumers being switched off or having their power consumption reduced. Power management will charge the new battery as if it’s the old worn out battery, causing premature failure of the replacement battery.

Important! If the new battery is not registered, incorrect readings may appear in the display of the on-board computer due to old data in the power management system (check control message ”Recharge battery” appears even though the battery is new).

12-1

A service function informs the power management in the Digital Engine Electronics (DME) or the Digital Diesel Electronics (DDE) of a battery replacement. The following operations are performed:

-The current mileage reading is stored for the battery replacement.

-The stored measured values (battery charge statuses, current, voltage, temperature, etc.) are deleted.

-The power management is initialized.

12-2

Available registration options:

Replacing battery with exact same type – (Simple registration)
Replacing battery with same type but different capacity – (Registration/Conversion)
Replacing battery with different type – (Programming/Conversion/Registration)
Updating software of complete battery management system

Changes to the charging profile also affects how the Start/Stop system works for vehicles with EfficientDynamics

Car 1:

You’re renewing the battery with identical replacement. You register replacement to let the car know that the battery is new and the charging profile is adjusted accordingly. If you don’t the vehicle will charge for an old battery and cause premature failure.

Car 2:

You fit an AGM in place of a Standard LA battery (or vice versa). If you don’t register the replacement then it will toast the new battery for similar reasons to Car 1 but even worse as the charging profile will be for the incorrect type battery and cause even faster battery failure. In this case you MUST use a ‘conversion’ to change the battery type. Then, register a replacement.

Notice! Determination of state of charge after a battery replacement

After a battery replacement, the vehicle must be left standing for at least 3 hours with its new battery. It is not possible to establish with any reliability the state of charge of the new battery until that time. Possible Check Control messages about total discharge of the battery are then no longer displayed.

12-4

Notes for disconnecting and connecting battery

The scope of application of some systems may be restricted after a power supply interruption. Likewise, individual settings may be lost.

Settings or activations must be carried out, depending on the equipment specification. For example:

.Vehicles with automatic engine start‐stop function (MSA): MSA function is active only after learning period (vehicle must not be woken for a period of approx. 6 hours

. E46 Perform (four-wheel drive) / E53 / E83: steering angle sensor adjustment

. If necessary, activate slide/tilt sunroof

. If necessary, activate power windows

.If necessary, activate mirror with compass

Only E60, E61, E63, E64, E70, E71, E90, E91, E92, E93: mount steering angle

Skipping the battery registration process can dramatically shorten the life of a battery in these vehicles, be it an AGM or a conventional battery. Several issues can cause premature battery failure, see post on Energy Diagnosis, but on a late model BMW, skipping battery registration can be one of them.

What do you think about that Autel Maxisys Elite?

2-1

Thinking about trading my modis ultra for an Autel Maxisys Elite. What do you think about that?

Reason being the shop I work at has a Very Edge and with my Modis it’s kind of redundant. Sometimes the SO won’t do what I need so I’m thinking the Autel might fill some of those holes. And if the Autel won’t do it I can use the shop Verus. Plus the updates are cheaper and I’d like to be able to print from the scanner without having to transfer to my computer first.

Review by Moderator:

I’m glad you brought this up, as I’ve had the exact same thought. I think the Autel would definitely fill some gaps in the Snap-On coverage. The wireless adapter is always nice. The two years of free updates is tempting. That’s about $2,000 worth of software on the Snap-On truck, if you’re buying every update.

Reply by Platinum Member:

What scanner do you have Tyler? I think I’ve about talked myself out of switching brands. You really kinda need both. SO seems to have more reliable PIDs and if it lists a test or function, it works. Not always the case with Autel. I’m gonna price it out with AESwave anyway, but I think it’s around $3500 but comes with 2 years of updates.

SO rep told me yesterday they had a buy 17.4 and get 18.2 free. I said that’s not really a deal is it. He looked at me funny and I said “well 18.2 is about to come out” It comes out in April.lol .

Reply by Moderator:

I have a Modis Ultra, and the shop has an Autel Scan Tool MaxiSys. It’s like you said, you really need to have both. Too many gaps in the SO coverage to rely on it exclusively, and I can’t stand how the Autel displays data. :silly: Autel is far better with Euro makes, as well, IMO.

I see the Elite going for around $2400 on OBD2TOOL? On other retailers, anyway. I figure AESwave would be close.

The Modis has 17.2 now, and I’m seriously considering letting it lapse.
